Shifting the weight of wedding photography

Wedding and event photographers are always in a position of uncertainty never quite knowing how the day will play out. However, there are a couple of things we can be certain of, a lot of time on our feet and long hours!

This type of photography means having to adapt to every situation, but this comes at a cost, typically in the form of weight.  Two DSLR’s with a. 24-70 and a 70-200 is a lot of weight to have hanging on your shoulder for hours on end. This weight brings fatigue, pain, and can limit your range of motion, which can cause us to miss vital shots.

Having to Accepting that the pains, fatigue, and mobility limitations just come with the territory of being a wedding photographer or so I thought. After trying some different straps and holders (I won’t name brands here) all of which after an 8-12-hour day lead me to the same feeling of fatigue and pain, then I came across Spider Holster. At first, I was unsure having not really heard of them before but once I read some of their reviews, I decided to make the investment. This unconventional way to carry our gear did more than just take away the fatigue and aches, it gave me full range of motion to get any shot I wanted! No more cameras on a short leash.

With fantastic build quality, I can really trust it with my most expensive equipment. There are a lot of cheap imitations of this system available, but when you have £1000’s worth of equipment hanging on your hip it’s not worth cutting costs.

Fast forward to today and I now use the Spider System at all my weddings and events. It was strange at first, but you very quickly get used to the shift in weight and wonder why you had not changed over sooner. The shift of the weight from our shoulders to our hips leaves us with tremendous amounts of endurance to get through even the longest of days. All of the other strap systems are now in a box in the loft gathering dust.

At the end of the day, it’s all about getting the shot, making the client happy, and knowing you did your best. But also, being comfortable to do this day in day out is key for longevity in this field of work. So, for me the Spider Holster is a vital piece of the puzzle that helps keeps us at the top of our game.
